Udawatta Kele Sanctuary
Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a Forest in Kandy, Central Province, Sri Lanka.
Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a protected forest area in a hill ridge behind the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy. It is 104 hectares (257 acres) and is often referred to as the Royal Forest Park of Kandy, which is a significant ecological haven in the urban area. The forest was used as a royal park of the Kandyan kings in old times and was called “Uda Wasala Watta” (the garden above the royal palace). In 1856, it was made a forest reserve, and in 1938, a sanctuary.
The sanctuary is known for its biodiversity, with many native plant species and a variety of wildlife. It is popular among birdwatchers and has attracted over 80 bird species, including endemic birds like the Sri Lankan hanging parrot, Layard's parakeet, and yellow-fronted barbet. Toque macaques, purple-faced langurs, wild boar, and other animals of the forest are also seen in the reserve.
Apart from its natural value, Udawatta Kele is significant in terms of its cultural and historical value. The forest holds ancient meditation caves, Buddhist hermitages, monasteries, and the historic Royal Bath (Ulpange), indicating its long relationship to the Kandyan Kingdom and Buddhist monastic traditions.
Today, the Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a popular choice for nature walks, bird watching, photography, and peaceful recreation. Its shade trails with thick forest canopy and tranquil ambience offer a respite from the hustle and bustle of Kandy city.
