International Buddhist Museum
International Buddhist Museum is a Museum in Kandy, Central Province, Sri Lanka.
International Buddhist Museum (ජාත්යන්තර බෞද්ධ කෞතුකාගාරය) at Kandy is the first Buddhist Museum in the world to display the worldwide heritage and propagation of Buddhism. The museum is housed in the historic complex of the Royal Palace, adjacent to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the influence of Buddhist teachings on the cultures of Asia and beyond. It is housed in a beautifully restored colonial-era building, which was previously part of the palace complex of the Kandyan Kingdom.
The museum was opened in 2011 to celebrate the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi, with exhibits from 17 countries, including Sri Lanka, India, Japan, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and South Korea. Statues, relics, manuscripts, paintings, temple models, and cultural artifacts from each country introduce its distinctive Buddhist traditions.
This museum offers an educational tour that traces the history of the Buddha and Buddhism, highlighting the unique and shared character of Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana traditions. It features interactive exhibits, historical displays, and art collections, making it an educational and cultural experience for visitors, including pilgrims, students, and tourists interested in Buddhist history, philosophy, and culture.
Today, the International Buddhist Museum stands as an important cultural landmark in Kandy, promoting international understanding and preserving the rich heritage of Buddhism for future generations.
