Asgiri Gedige Rajamaha Viharaya
Asgiri Gedige Rajamaha Viharaya is a Buddhist temple in Kandy, Central Province, Sri Lanka.
Asgiri Gedige Rajamaha Viharaya (අස්ගිරි ගෙඩිගේ රජමහා විහාරය) is one of the most significant Buddhist temples in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and a part of the historic monastic complex of Asgiri Maha Viharaya. The temple was constructed in the early 14th century by King Parakramabahu IV and has been a chief hub of Theravada Buddhism, Buddhist education, and religious administration for centuries. It's the headquarters of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siyam Nikaya, one of the most prominent Buddhist monastic orders in Sri Lanka, and one of the keepers of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy.
The monastery building has a shrine building named "Gedige". It is notable for its traditional Kandyan architecture, old paintings, beautifully carved pillars, and a peaceful image house which contains precious examples of religious art in Sri Lanka. There are also historic buildings in the surrounding monastery, such as assembly halls, meditation areas, and the cremation grounds of the royal family known as Adahana Maluwa.
