Kandy Lake
Kandy Lake is a Lake in Kandy, Central Province, Sri Lanka.
Kandy Lake is a beautiful artificial lake situated in the heart of Kandy, adjacent to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It is one of the most familiar attractions and landmarks of the city, and is a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists. It was built by the last king of the Kandyan Kingdom, King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, in 1807. It was constructed as part of the royal capital to enhance the beauty and prestige of the city, and was originally called the Kiri Muhuda ("Sea of Milk").
Kandy Lake is situated on about 60 acres (24 hectares) and is bordered by a picturesque walkway which provides views of the city, the hills, and the historic buildings. In the middle of the lake is a small island, on which the king used to spend his recreation and which, as it is said, was unified with the royal palace by a secret passage. The lake is also a source of beauty and tranquility for the city of Kandy and is a part of its cultural heritage. It is located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Kandy area, along with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and other historic sites.
Currently, Kandy Lake is famous for leisure activities, sightseeing, photography, birdwatching, exploring the cultural atmosphere at Kandy, and enjoying views of the annual Esala Perahera celebrations.
The lake is still a significant landmark in Kandy's history, culture, and natural beauty, and it continues to be a place of tranquility and beauty in the heart of the hill-country capital of Sri Lanka.
