Elephant Transit Home
Elephant Transit Home is a Rehabilitation Center in Udawalawa, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka.
Elephant Transit Home (Ath Athuru Sevana) is a rehabilitation center (orphanage) for orphaned or separated elephant calves. This is situated on the western side of Udawalawe National Park, near the Udawalawe reservoir. It was established by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation with support from the Born Free Foundation in 1995. The main goal of this center is rehabilitation and release. It focuses on raising orphaned elephant calves, treating injuries and illness, reducing human dependency, and, once they are old, healthy, and capable, releasing them back into the wild. There is no riding, no performance, and no chaining for elephant calves. Also, human contact is intentionally kept minimum in this place. Hence, the calves maintain as much wild behavior as possible.
When new orphaned calves arrive at this place, they receive medical care and nutrition. Also, they are acclimatized, socialized with other orphans, and allowed to roam, bathe, and play. Calves are fed regularly until they are strong enough. The viewing platform is placed at a significant distance so as not to stress the calves. Feeding times are advertised, and visitors can watch feeding sessions. Further, there are educational materials and displays to learn about elephant conservation and the threats elephants face.
