Udawalawe Reservoir is a Reservoir in Udawalawa, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka.
The Udawalawe Reservoir is one of the large man-made water bodies constructed in the southern part of Sri Lanka, situated on the border between the Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces. It was formed in the 1960s with the construction of the Udawalawe Dam, which dammed the Walawe River, primarily to supply water for irrigating farmland and generating hydroelectric power.
Surrounded by the scenic beauty of Udawalawe National Park, the reservoir spans approximately 3,400 hectares and is of great importance to the farming communities and wildlife of the area. It's a place that nature lovers and tourists love, as it is home to numerous animals, including herds of Asian elephants, which can often be spotted on the shores.
Apart from its utility, the reservoir also has an aesthetic value as the calm waters mirror the surrounding hills and forests, providing a good vantage point for birdwatching, photography, and eco-tourism.
