Bambarakanda Falls
Bambarakanda Falls is a Waterfall in Kalupahana, Uva Province, Sri Lanka.
Bambarakanda Falls is situated on the Kalupahana - Ohiya Road in the Badulla District. It is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka, measuring 263 meters (863 feet) in height. This waterfall ranks as the 299th tallest in the world. Bambarakanda Falls is created by Kuda Oya, a tributary of the Walawe River. The surrounding landscape of the falls features lush greenery, pine forests, and mist-covered hills.
The water of this waterfall descends in a single, near-vertical plunge, remaining in contact with the rock face. This is called the horsetail type. The ideal season to visit the waterfall is March to May. Moderate rainfall ensures optimal flow with safer access. During monsoon (October–February), this waterfall is dramatic, powerful, and more hazardous due to its slipperiness. Also, during the dry season (June–September), the waterfall diminishes to a trickle, and easy to navigate through the trails. Through this journey, travelers have opportunities to witness highland biodiversity, such as birds, langurs, and native flora, due to especially near Horton Plains and Ohiya forests. Travelers can reach this waterfall via a narrow, winding road off the A4 highway (Colombo-Ratnapura-Wellawaya-Batticaloa Road), turning from the Kalupahana junction.
