Ravana Waterfall
Ravana Waterfall is a Waterfall in Ella, Uva Province, Sri Lanka.
Ravana Waterfall (රාවණා දියඇල්ල) is a part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary. It is located on the Ella-Wellawaya road, approximately 6 km from the Ella Railway Station. Also, travelers can reach Ravana Waterfall by traveling 10 km along the Wellawaya road from the Kubalwela junction on the Badulla-Bandarawela road. This waterfall can be viewed from the main road. Kirindi Oya originates from the south of Bandarawela in the Badulla District, based on Ravana Waterfall.
Ravana Waterfall is approximately 25 m (82 ft) in height. Also, it is one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka. During the monsoon season, the water of this waterfall is said to be similar to an Areca flower with withering petals. Hence, this period is best to visit the waterfall. On rainy days, it is most scary. But it flows very quietly in the dry season.
This waterfall was named after King Ravana, who ruled Sri Lanka according to traditional folklore. As per folklore, King Ravana brought Princess Sita and hid in a cave near this waterfall. Also, there is a belief that Princess Sita bathed in a pool that accumulated the water falling from this waterfall.
This place is most popular among local and foreign tourists due to its spectacular three stages. Climbing to the top of the waterfall is never recommended due to its being scary. The lower stage of this waterfall is best suitable for bathing. A quite a bit large natural swimming pool is available at the bottom of the waterfall. Travelers can use this pool to dip, swim, and play water sports. Another small natural pool is available at the side. It is suitable for women and children. However, this place is suitable for bathing only when the water level of the waterfall is low.
